![]() It promises to be another memorable by-election held during this parliament. Its attack will focus on the SNP's record in governing Scotland, the Conservative performance at Westminster. Labour will be keen to make this a two-horse race, hoping to win over disillusioned SNP supporters and to squeeze a sizeable Conservative vote from last time. This is double the swing Labour requires to win Rutherglen and Hamilton West. Current polling suggests a 10-point swing nationally from SNP to Labour since the last election. In the 20 general elections Labour regained and then lost the seat again. Nicola Sturgeon lead the party to a famous victory in that election, winning all but three of the 59 Scottish constituencies and becoming the third-largest party in the House of Commons. She first won the seat from Labour in 2015 with a by-election sized swing of 31 percentage points. This led to her suspension from parliament and a recall petition. The vacancy arises from the fact that the sitting MP, Margaret Ferrier, was convicted for a breach of travel rules during the pandemic.
